Sustainability Career Profile | Jonathan Hanwit, thinkPARALLAX

July 10, 2018

Jonathan Hanwit is the co-founder of thinkPARALLAX in Encinitas, California. He’s a surfer, a Dad and a CEO who is out to help businesses and brands have more than just an impact on their bottom line. thinkPARALLAX is a full-service brand and communications consultancy that works with clients to help them “rise on purpose.” Prior to founding thinkPARALLAX, Jonathan worked in marketing for a non-profit, but found social impact early in life and has continued to build on those roots. We had a great conversation that took on topics ranging from entrepreneurship, embedding purpose in your brand, finding the new norm, risk vs. reward, and more.

thinkPARALLAX started as a design and branding agency that would “approach all situations from multiple angles," but over the course of 6-7 years the organization evolved into a company that focused on making a positive impact on society. Early projects included working with Red Cross during the tsunami in Japan and water saving campaigns with the City of San Diego before evolving into citizenship and sustainability strategy and communications work for corporations like Southwest Airlines, HULU, and Qualcomm. A handful of years ago, Jonathan and his co-founder decided to work solely on projects that make a difference in the world, helping brands hone their values and vision to strengthen their brand - in other words, to Rise on Purpose.

thinkPARALLAX challenges brands with this: beyond profit, why are you in business? His team works with brand leadership and communication teams to strategically and effectively communicate that "why" to customers and communities. Jonathan and thinkPARALLAX are confident that business can/will do the right thing (sustainably) while simultaneously, generating profit.

“Innovation is necessary for survival,” Jonathan says during our talk. And innovation comes in many forms.
